What Is a Dental Emergency?

Some common dental emergencies include:

  • Injury to the mouth: This can include cuts, lacerations, or puncture wounds.
  • Knocked out or displaced tooth: If your tooth has been knocked out, it’s important to try and find the tooth and bring it with you to our office. If your tooth has been displaced, we will work to gently put it back into place.
  • Broken tooth: A broken tooth can be painful and dangerous if left untreated. We will work to repair the tooth and make sure there is no further damage.
  • Severe tooth pain: If you are experiencing severe tooth pain, we can help. We will work to determine the cause of the pain and provide relief.
  • Infected tooth or gum: An infected tooth or gum can be serious and should be treated as soon as possible. We will clean the infection and provide medication if necessary.

Preventing Emergency Dental Treatment

Dental emergencies sadly can occur to anyone at any time and can be excruciatingly painful and disruptive, whether it’s a chipped tooth from an accident or an unexpected toothache. The good news is that you can take some steps to aid in their prevention:

  • Maintain good oral health by regularly brushing and flossing.
  • Refrain from eating hard foods that can break or crack your teeth.
  • Wear a protective mouthguard if you engage in physical activities, such as sports.
  • Schedule routine cleanings and exams at the dentist.

You can lessen your likelihood of experiencing a dental emergency by taking these precautions.
