Periodontal disease also known as gum disease is a silent epidemic that is harming the health of millions of people nationwide. It’s a chronic infection of the gums that affects nearly half of all adults in the United States.
Gum disease starts with bacteria in the mouth consisting of saliva and food creating plaque, a film that builds up on the surface of your teeth. If this damaging film is not sufficiently removed through good oral hygiene, it can harden into tartar. Tartar pushes the gums away from the teeth and creeps below the gum line, creating a pocket that can become infected and potentially painful, leading to gingivitis. Gingivitis, the first stage of gum disease, is characterized by red, swollen, and bleeding gums. If left untreated, it will advance to periodontal disease, which can then progress into periodontitis, a more serious form of gum disease. Periodontitis occurs when the infection spreads to the bone and tissues surrounding the tooth which causes the bone to resorb over time and ultimately tooth loss.
To safeguard your oral health, gum disease is a serious infection that needs to be treated right away. We always strive to offer the most conservative care at our office. Because of this, we place a high priority on preventing gum disease through appropriate preventative care and prompt treatment. To ensure it is detected early, we educate our patients about the significance of brushing and flossing, encouraging them to schedule routine cleanings and checkups.
In the case of gingivitis, an early stage of gum disease, this might just entail making adjustments to your personal care routine. However, for more extensive cases, a deep cleaning technique known as Scaling and Root Planing, also known as SRP, would be recommended. An SRP cleaning consists of our highly experienced dental hygienist carefully removing plaque and buildup, cleaning your teeth and gums, and bringing them back to health. If a “deep cleaning” makes you nervous, you’re in the right place. We numb our patients so they do not feel a thing during the SRP process, making the appointment seamless for the patient.
For those with advanced gum disease, we are pleased to provide soft tissue laser treatment. A minimally invasive procedure known as laser gum treatment can remove damaged gum tissue with little pain or downtime. In actuality, patients typically recover more quickly and with less difficulty. As a result, those with advanced gum disease may find a great deal of relief from laser gum treatment. We recommend getting in touch with our office.
